Giving

There are many ways you can get involved in St John's and help keep this much-loved church at the heart of Hurst Green. However, not everyone realises that as a church we rely entirely on the financial generosity of those who value our community work, activities for all ages, pastoral care and worship, to keep going. Donations to St John's are vital to maintain the building, pay the vicar and support all we do to share God's love with thousands of different people year by year. Please consider how you can help us.

By whatever means you choose to give to us, thank you for your support: it is greatly appreciated.

Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.
1 Chronicles 29:14

Regular giving – Parish Giving Scheme

If you feel able to donate to us in a regular way, please consider using the Parish Giving Scheme. This is  a not for profit church scheme endorsed by the Southwark Diocese. A monthly, quarterly or annual debit is taken by Direct Debit from your bank and the Parish Giving Scheme automatically credits St John’s with the amount plus any associated Gift Aid on a monthly basis. It is covered by the UK banks’ Direct Debit Guarantee so you can change or stop your amount at any time.

For more information please read our PGS leaflet (PDF), and for answers to frequently asked questions please see our Introduction leaflet (PDF) and/or visit the PGS website: https://www.parishgivingscheme.org.uk/for-donors/

There are three ways to sign up to PGS:

Online

Please visit Parish Giving Scheme and press [Regular Giving] below "Select your gift type".
Once you are signed up you should be sent an email within a few minutes, which will contain a link to allow you to set a password.
From there you will then be taken to a screen where you can enter your bank details to set up your Direct Debit. For this you will need the following information to hand:

  •  How much you would like to give, and at what frequency (per month, quarter or year).
  •  Your bank details: Account name, Sort Code and Account Number.
  • The answer to: 'Do you wish to have your donation increased yearly automatically by the annual rate of inflation?'
  • The answer to: 'Do you wish to Gift Aid your donation?'

By Phone

To sign up by phone, or to make any changes to your existing arrangement, please call the dedicated sign-up line on 0333 002 1271. You will need the following information to hand:

  • Our PGS reference number: 370637121
  • The name of the church: St John the Evangelist RH8, Diocese of Southwark
  • How much you would like to give, and at what frequency (per month, quarter or year).
  • Your bank details: Account name, Sort Code and Account Number.
  • The answer to: 'Do you wish to have your donation increased yearly automatically by the annual rate of inflation?'
  • The answer to: 'Do you wish to Gift Aid your donation?'

By Post

Please download, print and complete the PGS Gift form (PDF). If you cannot download this form or are unable to print it, please email our Office: office@stjhurstgreen.co.uk. The information will be delivered by post, or hand delivered if you’re local.

One-off donations

Parish Giving Scheme

Please visit Parish Giving Scheme and press [One-off Gift] below "Select your gift type".
There you can choose your amount.
If you are already signed up to PGS you can use [Log in to account] to use the payment method and Gift Aid you have already set up.
If you are not (yet) signed up, please use [Continue as a guest], where you can enter your details and whether or not you wish for Gift Aid to be applied to your donation. At the end of the process you'll be invited to use your details to create a account, handy if you think that you may give to use again!

You can also use your account for setting up a regular payment if later you would like to do this. We'd love you to do this because it provides certainty for our work and planning.

Charities Aid Foundation

Also perfect for quick one-off donations via your credit card, debit card, PayPal or CAF account, and if you are a UK taxpayer you can apply Gift Aid. Please visit the St John's donation page on the CAF website

Please do not use CAF to set up a Direct Debit because we pay a fee for this. Of course, we are delighted if you would like to give regularly to us, in which case please use the Parish Giving Scheme shown above.

Direct by Bank Transfer

We are happy to receive donations direct to our bank account, which for large one-off donations is generally the cheapest way to do it. Please use the following details:

  • Sort Code: 40-52-40
  • Account: 00033188
  • Name: The PCC of the Ecc Parish of St Johns Hurst Green. (Please note the name contains no punctuation.)
  • IBAN: GB76CAFB40524000033188 (from a non-UK bank account)

If you are a UK taxpayer and are not already registered with us for Gift Aid, please complete and return a Gift Aid form. This is available as a Word document which you can return by email (Gift Aid Form [Word]) or a PDF (Gift Aid Form [PDF]).
If you would like acknowledgement of your donation’s safe arrival please contact our Treasurer: treasurer@stjhurstgeen.co.uk.

Please be aware that CAF Bank, with whom we bank, has now implemented Confirmation of Payee, so you will need to enter into Payee a name that will provide a match with our account name, The PCC of the Ecc Parish of St Johns Hurst Green. It is unlikely that your bank will allow you to enter such a long name, but St Johns Hurst Green should be sufficient. If you can't make a match, some banks will allow you to proceed if you accept the risk warning, but others will require you to speak to a real person (in branch, by phone or online) to set us up.

Contactless Donations

These are available during services and other events. All you have to do is present your MasterCard or Visa card to our ‘Tap to Give’ collection plate or reader to make a contactless donation. Donations for refreshments before or after a service are gratefully received this way too!

For larger donations, or to buy fundraising event tickets etc., where the total comes to more than the contactless limit, we can also take Chip + PIN payments.

Gift Aid is claimable by St John’s on ’anonymous’ donations up to £30 (under the Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme).

If your donation exceeds the contactless limit or you would like to claim Gift Aid for your own tax purposes please complete a yellow Gift Aid envelope that you should find in a box in the chairs in St John's, or on the table at the back of the church. Please write the amount you gave, the time and date, and your email address on the back, then put it in the collection plate or hand it to a sidesperson after a service, or in the green box on the left of the inner door into the church. That way, our Treasurer will be able to associate your donation with your declaration and complete the process that will allow your donation to be included in your ‘thank you’ total at the end of the tax year.

Fundraising While Shopping

Easyfundraising

Whenever you buy anything online – from your weekly shop to your annual holiday – you could be raising free donations for St John’s with easyfundraising. There are over 4,000 shops and websites on board ready to make a donation – including eBay, Argos, John Lewis, ASOS, Booking.com and M&S – and it won’t cost you a penny extra to help us raise funds.

Please go to www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/stjohnshurstgreen/  and join for free. If you are already a member of easyfundraising, please consider whether you might like to change your chosen charity to us, either for the long term or just for a while.

If you install the Add Donation Reminder then, when you visit a website that is part of the easygiving campaign, you will be alerted to this and be given the option to receive the donation for St John’s. Once you have checked out, the retailer will make a donation to St John’s at no extra cost to you. The amount varies by retailer and you can see typical amounts at www.easyfundraising.org.uk/retailers/.

Amazon Smile

Sadly, since the end of February 2023, Amazon Smile no longer allows you to create donations while shopping. But if you do shop online with other retailers, please consider signing up to Easyfundraising as described above.

Legacies

We have benefitted greatly from legacies over the years. Some people request that their legacy is used or invested for a specific purpose, others leave it up to us to use the legacy as appropriate at the time. If you would like to discuss further, please email our Office: office@stjhurstgreen.co.uk or the Treasurer: treasurer@stjhurstgreen.co.uk.

Because we are a charity, a legacy to us can also reduce your estate for Inheritance Tax purposes. Please identify us as 'The PCC of St John the Evangelist, Hurst Green, Surrey (Charity No. 1133107)’ in your Will.
